One of southern Africa’s oldest dance styles, performed around the fire by the Khoisan, is experiencing a revival among the youth.
The energetic rieldans requires fast footwork and often incorporates imitations of animals. And, as was the case centuries ago, it is often performed in a circle.
“If (during the dance) a man swings his hat in front of a lady she can accept his invitation or not. Sometimes you will see a man throwing his shirt on the floor, and if the lady picks it up she will be his girlfriend,” he says.
